No Doubt @ Coachella, silly TikTok videos of the week, SLC Punk! the remix
🧠 #onmymind
When I tell you that I’m reborn after Saturday night’s No Doubt set at Coachella, that’s exactly what I mean. I watched the livestream from the comfort of my own home because let’s face it , I don’t know if I could manage to be in that crowd these days. But never say never!
I was looking forward to this performance since it was announced. As I recently mentioned on my Behind the Music Videos of the 90s podcast episode, Gwen Stefani was my first real memory of a rock star that I fully wanted to be. Courtney Love was always there in my mind but No Doubt really found mainstream success around the time I was 13 and shaping my identity. To see her up on that stage was truly magical. I haven’t seen them live for YEARS and to my excitement the band didn’t skip a beat. The fact that they have hit and after hit (including playing deep cuts like Total Hate ‘95) the third wave ska was really in effect. When I was watching the stream the only thing that was apparent was this crowd was not their usual base. The crowd was truly unaware of this legendary set that was unfolding in front of them. For me I was loving every minute.
The band was so insync, Tony looked and played amazing, Adrian was slamming those drums, Tom was flying on guitar, and Gwen’s fashion and beauty look were out of this world. What I loved particularly about the set was it included moments that are signature for them as a live band. Gwen jumping on Tony’s back, the pushups, and the scaffold climbing during ‘Just a Girl’, all just brought me right back.
Let’s hope a new album and reunion tour are in the works…

🚔 Episode 178: It's melting! | Kuffs (1992)
What is it about Christian Slater? He has the charm to basically almost carry anything. Well, Kuffs is a little known action comedy from 1992 that only really survives because of the magic of our lead character. Charles picked this one and it was a light refresher into why the 90s had such a diverse group of film genres.
We talk about the unexpected fashion we loved, just wonder what the hell this script was about, and take a look at the recent work of Slater and why this movie would have made a fun tv series.

🧷 Deep Cut: SLC Punk! (1998) [Remix Edition]
It's that time again! Dusting off one of our early episodes for a remix edition! We're going back to Salt Lake City, Utah in the mid 80s to see what Stevo and Heroin Bob are up to. I really need no excuse to talk about this film again. Our first episode was during the pandemic so it's high time that I review one of my 'foundational' films again.
Mikey joined me on this one to talk about our love for Matthew Lillard, the outlandish and amazing fashion, and the countless hilarious scenes and characters we meet along the way.
Off-topic rants include: more Scream talk, a brief chat on the Mod subculture, how Showgirls really is one of the best films of the 90s

A little bit of a surprise episode! I had to make an adjustment and find a topic for a solo journey. There is a massive list of TV shows that I have to cover for the Patreon but after the Peaky Blinders episode, I wanted something light. Enter in...How to Make it in America
This was a short lived show that premiered in 2010 and really captured that #hustleculture spirit of the 2010s in a nostalgic way that made me tear up. With ‘indie sleaze’ fashion in its second half, a mention of NYLON magazine, and the backdrop of NYC made this the perfect show for its time. Unfortunately it was cancelled and really never found a larger audience, but man I would do anything for a season 3 wrap up.
I'm talking the first episode of the series, the history of the development, and the chemistry between all the actors being in the right place at the right time.
Off-topic rants include: the imdb message boards and the state of denim
